The verdict

These barely compete. The Alaskan is a defensive packing gun — 2.5 inches of barrel, brutal blast, meant to ride on a chest rig and hopefully never come out. The Raging Hunter is a deliberate hunting revolver with a long ported barrel, a factory optics rail, and grips designed to keep .454 recoil survivable across a range session. Pick by the job: carrying it, take the Alaskan; aiming it, take the Taurus.

Common questions

Is .454 Casull necessary?

For most people, no. Both guns also chamber .45 Colt, which is far more pleasant and adequate for a great deal of hunting. Many owners shoot .45 Colt almost exclusively and keep .454 for the field.

How bad is the muzzle blast?

Severe on both, and worse on the ported Taurus. Doubled hearing protection is the norm, and shooting either one from inside a covered bench is genuinely unpleasant for everyone nearby.

Can a .454 be used for bear defense?

It is a common choice, usually loaded with heavy hard-cast bullets. Barrel length, carry method, and whether you can actually hit under stress matter more than the cartridge on paper. Practice with the load you carry.
