Bullet Pull and Crimp Jump: The Revolver Failure Nobody Warns You About

It is the one revolver stoppage you cannot clear in the field, it happens most readily with exactly the heavy loads people carry for serious purposes, and almost nobody checks for it until it has already happened once.

The short version

  • Recoil pulls the unfired bullets forward out of their cases. The gun accelerates rearward; the bullets, by inertia, do not.
  • A bullet that protrudes past the cylinder face jams the barrel and locks the cylinder solid. There is no field fix.
  • Heavy bullets and light guns are the worst combination, which is exactly the configuration people choose for backcountry carry.

What is actually happening

Fire one chamber of a revolver and the entire gun accelerates rearward against your hand. The cases in the other five chambers go with it, because they are gripped by the chamber walls and pushed by the recoil shield. The bullets in those cases are held only by the tension of the case neck and the crimp.

Inertia does the rest. The bullets want to stay where they were. Relative to the case moving backward around them, they move forward. If the crimp cannot hold them, they creep.

The failure mode is specific and total. When a bullet has crept far enough that its nose passes the front face of the cylinder, it strikes the rear of the barrel. The cylinder can no longer rotate. The gun is not jammed in a way you can clear — the round is physically wedged between cylinder and barrel, and the cylinder cannot be opened on a swing-out design because it cannot turn or move.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Most revolver stoppages are clearable. A high primer, a case under the extractor star, a piece of debris — all of these can be dealt with by opening the cylinder. Crimp jump prevents the cylinder from opening at all. It turns a loaded revolver into an inert object at the exact moment you were relying on it, which is why it deserves attention out of proportion to how often it occurs.

Note the shape of that list. The highest-risk combination is heavy bullets, heavy loads, and a light gun — which describes a short-barrelled magnum carried in the backcountry almost exactly. It is not a coincidence that this is the failure people hear about in that context.

How to check for it

The test costs nothing and takes half a minute, and it should be part of accepting any new heavy load into service.

  1. Load the cylinder fully with the ammunition you intend to rely on. Set aside one unfired round from the same box as a reference.
  2. Fire three or four rounds, in the manner you would actually shoot — not gently.
  3. Open the cylinder and remove the remaining unfired cartridges.
  4. Compare their overall length against the reference round. A caliper is best; laid side by side on a flat surface is adequate to catch anything significant.
  5. Any measurable creep is a failure. Not a warning, not something to watch — that load in that gun will eventually lock it up.

Repeat the test whenever you change ammunition, whenever you change guns, and with every batch of handloads. A load that behaves in one revolver may not behave in another, because gun weight and grip design change how sharply the cartridges are accelerated.

Eyeballing catches gross creep and misses the early stages, which are the ones worth catching. A cheap caliper resolves the question definitively and is useful for half a dozen other revolver measurements — checking whether a heavy load will actually fit your cylinder, comparing seating depth between batches, measuring what you were sold against what was advertised. Keep it where you shoot rather than where you store tools.

What prevents it

For factory ammunition, the answer is mostly selection and verification. Ammunition intended for heavy revolver use is crimped for it, and the test above tells you whether a given load is adequate in your specific gun. If it is not, use something else — this is not a problem you can fix on the shooting side.

For handloaders, the controls are direct:

  • Use bullets with a cannelure or crimp groove and crimp into it. A roll crimp rolling into a groove is what revolver cartridges are designed around.
  • Crimp firmly enough, which for heavy revolver loads is more than feels intuitive if your background is in semi-auto loading.
  • Maintain case-neck tension. The crimp supplements neck tension; it does not replace it. Cases worked many times lose it.
  • Inspect and cull tired brass. Thin, split or over-worked case mouths will not hold.
  • Consider a dedicated crimp die if your loads are heavy, since crimping as a separate operation from seating gives more consistent results.
  • Test every batch using the procedure above. Every batch, not the first one.
Not a reloading manual

This describes what the crimp is doing and why it matters. It is not load data and it is not a substitute for a current reloading manual. Use published data from a component manufacturer or a current manual for your specific components and firearm, and never exceed it. Over-crimping has its own consequences, including pressure effects and damaged bullets.

If it happens to you

You will know immediately: the cylinder will not turn and the gun will not open. Do not force it.

  1. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction. The gun still contains live ammunition and it is still capable of firing whatever is currently under the hammer.
  2. Finger off the trigger, and do not attempt to pull through the resistance. Forcing the action against a wedged bullet can damage the hand, the ratchet and the cylinder stop, and the repair is worse than the original problem.
  3. Do not try to lever the cylinder with a tool. You will bend the crane or the ejector rod.
  4. On a single action, open the loading gate and see whether the affected chamber can be reached; sometimes it can be, sometimes not.
  5. Take it to a gunsmith. Removing a wedged live round from a locked cylinder is a job for somebody who has done it, working with the appropriate care.

The reason this section is short is that there is no clever field remedy. Prevention is the entire strategy, and prevention is a thirty-second test.

The opposite problem

Worth knowing because it is often confused with crimp jump: bullets can also be driven into the case rather than out of it. This is bullet setback, and in revolvers it is uncommon — it happens mostly in semi-autos where the round is slammed forward into a feed ramp.

Where revolver shooters meet it is in handling: repeatedly loading and unloading the same cartridges, dropping loaded rounds onto hard surfaces, or forcing a round into a fouled chamber. Setback reduces the space the powder has to burn in, which raises pressure, and that is a genuinely dangerous direction to go.

The habit that addresses both: rotate your carry ammunition rather than loading and unloading the same rounds indefinitely, and inspect anything that has been handled a lot against a fresh round before trusting it.
