Best Revolver Detail-Strip Tools (and the Screwdrivers That Wreck Guns)

Almost every used revolver with chewed screw heads and a scarred side plate got that way in one afternoon, with a hardware-store screwdriver and good intentions. The tools that prevent it cost less than the damage does.

The short version

  • Buy hollow-ground screwdrivers before you remove a single screw. Tapered hardware-store tips cam out and round the slot, and buggered screws are permanent and immediately visible to any buyer.
  • Never pry a side plate off. It is fitted, not held on by friction at the edge, and prying leaves a mark that never comes out. It is removed by rapping the grip frame with a plastic mallet.
  • Extractor rods on some revolvers have left-hand threads. Turning the wrong way tightens them, and forcing it bends the rod.

How far you should actually go

There is a useful distinction between three levels of revolver work, and most people should stop at the second.

  • Field cleaning — bore, chambers, cylinder face, breech face, under the extractor star. No disassembly beyond opening the cylinder. This is what maintenance actually is, and it is where the majority of revolver problems are prevented.
  • Owner-level disassembly — removing grips, removing the cylinder and crane assembly on designs where that is a documented owner operation, cleaning under the extractor star properly. Requires correct screwdrivers and a bench block, and nothing else.
  • Detail strip — side plate off, lockwork out. Genuinely useful to understand, genuinely easy to do damage during, and rarely necessary. If you want to learn it, learn it on a cheap gun.

Everything below is organised around that. The tools for the first two levels are cheap and every revolver owner should have them. The tools for the third are a smaller purchase than most people expect, but the skill is the expensive part.

Verify unloaded, every single time

Before any disassembly or cleaning: open the cylinder, look at every chamber, and physically check each one. Then do it again. Remove all ammunition from the room you are working in. Most negligent discharges during cleaning happen on guns their owners were certain were empty.

Screwdrivers: the one non-negotiable

If you buy one thing from this page, buy this, and buy it before you touch a screw on any gun you care about.

A hardware-store screwdriver has a tapered, wedge-shaped tip. Put it in a firearm screw slot and it contacts only at the top two corners. Apply torque and the wedge shape converts some of that torque into lifting force, so the tip rises out of the slot and rounds the edges as it goes. That is camming out, and once it has happened the slot is permanently widened and the screw head is visibly damaged.

The geometry is the whole story. Firearm screws are slotted for a parallel-sided tip. Anything else is working against the design of the fastener.

A hollow-ground bit has parallel sides — the faces are ground concave so that they are vertical where they meet the slot. It bears on the full depth and width of the slot, so applied torque goes into rotation instead of into lifting. The screw turns, and the slot survives.

Buy a set rather than individual bits, because firearm screws come in a wide range of slot widths and depths and the correct bit is the one that fills the slot completely in both dimensions. A bit that is slightly narrow is nearly as bad as a tapered one.

The single highest-return tool purchase a revolver owner can make, and the one that most reliably distinguishes a gun that will hold its value from one that will not. Choose the bit that fills the slot completely in both width and depth — a bit that rattles in the slot damages it nearly as fast as a tapered tip. Bench blocks and punches

A bench block is a hard polymer or nylon block with holes and reliefs machined into it, sized to support a frame while a pin is driven out. The pin has somewhere to go, the frame is supported around the hole rather than at the edges, and nothing gets marred.

The alternative — holding the frame in one hand, or resting it on a vice jaw — produces exactly the damage you would expect. Blocks are cheap.

Punches follow the same logic as screwdrivers. Use brass or nylon punches against anything you care about the finish of, and steel punches only where a brass one will not do the job. A punch that is too small deforms the pin; a punch that is too large marks the frame around it.

A bench block supports the frame around the pin hole so the pin has somewhere to travel and the frame is not resting on its edges. Match the punch to the pin: too small and you upset the end of the pin, too large and you mark the frame. Use brass or nylon against blued and stainless surfaces and keep steel punches for pins that genuinely will not move otherwise. How a side plate actually comes off

A revolver side plate is precisely fitted into the frame, not held on by friction at its edge. Prying it up with a screwdriver leaves a permanent mark on both plate and frame and is instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with revolvers. The correct method, after removing every retaining screw, is to hold the revolver by the frame and rap the grip frame firmly with a plastic or rawhide mallet — the vibration walks the plate loose and it lifts off level. If it will not come, a screw is still in. Count them.

The chamber carbon ring deserves specific mention because it causes a problem people misdiagnose. If you shoot a lot of shorter cartridges in a longer chamber — .38 Special in .357 Magnum, .44 Special in .44 Magnum, .45 Colt in .454 Casull — carbon builds a hard ring at the case-mouth position. Eventually the longer cartridges will not seat fully, and the gun appears to have developed a chambering fault. It has not. The parts a generic cleaning kit does not address. A bronze chamber brush sized for the chamber rather than the bore is what removes the carbon ring that eventually stops longer cartridges seating. Most revolvers must be cleaned from the muzzle, which puts the rod directly against the crown — the precisely cut edge at the muzzle that determines how evenly gas leaves behind the bullet. Damage it and accuracy degrades permanently, and recrowning is gunsmith work. Gauges and measurement

The measurements that tell you about a revolver’s health are few, and the tools are inexpensive. They are worth owning if you buy used guns.

  • Barrel-cylinder gap. Measured with feeler gauges at the front of the cylinder. Too tight and the cylinder binds as fouling builds; too wide and you lose velocity and get more side spitting. Compare against the manufacturer’s specified range for that model rather than a general figure.
  • Endshake. Fore-and-aft cylinder movement with the action closed. Some is normal; excessive movement indicates wear and eventually affects headspace and timing.
  • Range rod. A precisely sized rod used to check chamber-to-bore alignment on each chamber. This is the measurement that tells you whether a revolver is timed correctly, and it is the one most worth knowing on a used purchase.

Worth owning if you buy used revolvers with any regularity, because these measure the things that are expensive to fix and invisible in photographs. The five mistakes that cost money

  1. Tapered screwdrivers. Covered above, and by a wide margin the most common. Damage is permanent and instantly visible to any future buyer.
  2. Prying the side plate. Leaves a mark that cannot be removed without refinishing, and refinishing destroys collector value.
  3. Turning the extractor rod the wrong way. On some revolvers the rod has a left-hand thread, so turning it the conventional direction tightens it. Forcing it bends the rod, which is a real repair. Check the specific model before applying any force.
  4. Abrasives on the cylinder face. Steel wool and abrasive pads remove the carbon ring and the finish underneath it together. Use an impregnated cloth and accept that some carbon staining on a cylinder face is normal and harmless.
  5. Detail-stripping a gun you cannot reassemble. Revolver lockwork contains small parts under spring tension, and the rebound slide in particular is notorious for launching across a room. Work in a tray or a clear bin, photograph each stage, and learn on a gun whose loss you would not mourn.
When to stop and call a gunsmith

Timing faults, endshake beyond specification, a cracked forcing cone, anything involving fitting a new part, and any spring change on a revolver you rely on. These are not stubbornness problems and they do not yield to more force. A revolver that fails to carry a chamber into alignment before the hammer falls should not be fired until it is corrected.
